Ridley Scott, the director of many acclaimed historical epics including Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, is back with a new film about one of the most famous figures in history: Napoleon Bonaparte. The film, plainly titled Napoleon, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Josephine. Sony has recently come out with a trailer for the film, featuring intense moments, beautifully panned battlefield scenes and our first look at Joaquin Phoenix in full historical ensemble!
What can we expect from ‘Napoleon’ judging by the trailer and tagline?
According to official sources, this film is desribed as capturing “Napoleon Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.” The filmmakers have also released a poster with a marketing tagline that reads: “He came from nothing. He conquered everything.
In the trailer, Bonaparte (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is seen saying, “I’m the first to admit when I make a mistake,” but he quickly adds, “I simply never do.” This line hints at the film’s exploration of Napoleon’s arrogance and ambition, as well as his complex relationship with Josephine. The trailer also shows multiple sweeping battlefield scenes, chronicling Napoleon’s rise to prominence during the French Revolution and his successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. The film promises to be a visually stunning and epic tale of one of the most famous figures in history.
“Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything — but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process. No actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin. He created one of movie history’s most complex Emperors in Gladiator, and we’ll create another with his Napoleon.”Ridley Scott
