Greta Gerwig’s new live action ‘Barbie’ movie already has audiences captivated with it’s colorful trailer, showcasing incredible fuchsia penthouses and dazzling bright pink outfits! It’s Dreamhouse-inspired film set looks so much like the actual thing that you would play with as a child, bedecked in different hues of pink, the similarities will surprise you. It apparently used so much pink paint to create the set, it caused an international shortage of the Rosco brand paint color. This information was shared by production designer Sarah Greenwood in an interview with Architectural Digest.

Barbie’s two-story penthouse is a surprisingly accurate copy of the playset it’s based on. It features a pink slide going from the top floor into a pool and lots of pink decor inside and out. The whole set is truly an absolute sight to behold, inspired by Palm Springs. Designers like Richard Neutra and set decorator Katie Spencer worked together to create this invention sporting a lot of midcentury modernism. The backdrop, consisting of mountains, palm trees and the sun in a corner, are completely hand-painted instead of added on with CGI to preserve “authentic artificiality”. Gerwig has mentioned that the Dreamhouse set was designed sans walls or doors just like an actual dollhouse, which is a creative design choice, especially when there are actual live humans walking the set.
“Maintaining the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount. I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much. As a result the world ran out of pink….We were literally creating the alternate universe of Barbie Land.”

What is the main plot of ‘Barbie’?
Barbie plans to paint the theaters pink on July 21, 2023. It stars Margot Robbie as Barbie who is banished from Barbieland for not being perfect enough. She decides to try out the human world, hoping to find happiness and acceptance there but ends up struggling in this new reality instead. There will be other versions of Barbie appearing in the movie such as ‘Mermaid Barbie’ played by Dua Lipa, ‘President Barbie’ played by Issa Rae and also Kate McKinnon as ‘Weird Barbie’. Ryan Gosling plays her loyal boyfriend Ken.
