Once one of the most prolific actresses in the world, Angelina Jolie has been inactive on the silver screen for a while now. Her last starring role was with ex-husband Brad Pitt in the 2015 film”By the Sea”, which she also directed. Since then, it’s her separation with Pitt that’s been hogging the limelight around the world.

Jolie has had a long and illustrious career as an actress, having twice been nominated for Academy Awards and winning once for Best Supporting Actress for “Girl, Interrupted”. Lately, she has focused more time and energy into directing feature films, starting with the Bosnian war drama “In the Land of Blood and Honey” in 2011 and also telling the tale of an American soldier trapped in a Japanese prison camp during WW-II in “Unbroken” in 2014.

Between these two features and “By the Sea”, she has only appeared in two movies. In 2014’s “Maleficent” she starred as the famed titular witch of the tale of Sleeping Beauty, and in 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” we saw her reprising the role of Master Tigress.

Between these movies, she saw a very public divorce from Brad Pitt and then went on to focus on a new directorial venture for Netflix, titled “First They Killed My Father”, an adaption of Loung Ung’s memoir of the same name.

However, things are about to change for fans who would rather watch her more on the screen than behind it. Promoting her latest at the Telluride International Film Festival, she said that her next feature will indeed be “Maleficent 2”. She was quoted as saying,

“We’ve been working on the screenplay for ‘Maleficent 2’ and it’s going to be a really strong sequel.”

For those unaware, Maleficent offered an alternate depiction of the classic Disney villain from Sleeping Beauty, including a backstory to the antagonist that revealed she isn’t as bad as the world thought. This new take on the character re-imagined her as a fairy who was betrayed by humans and had her wings stolen, making her bitter against the world of man. Though she initially sought revenge by cursing Aurora, Maleficent eventually grew to care for the girl in a maternal way. Seeing the good in humans, Maleficent redeemed herself by saving Aurora.

The movie went on to become Jolie’s highest grossing movie ever, with a global haul of $758.50 million. Needless to say, interest is at its peak for a sequel and now with Jolie’s confirmation, things are expected to move much faster.

The movie could start shooting as soon as early next year and be ready for a grand summer release in 2019.
